Through 54 holes, Phil Mickelson is the leader, holding a 2 stroke advantage over Tiger Woods and Nick Watney. Can Tiger catch Phil the final day? What golf fan won't be watching this tournament in November?

Tiger and Phil are helping to put this new WGC championship on the map. And they will be returning every year to China like clockwork.....they've both scratched off the January season opener in Hawaii for the tour winners, and replaced it with this tournament. Tiger may be going to Australia next week for the first time in a decade.....but after he wins there, he won't return. This China tournament is on the fast track to being one of the best 10 tournaments in the world, with a lot of help from 2 American players.

This is the kind of golf that everyone wants to see. I hope it will convert some of the Chinese fans who may not appreciate that rarity of these guys going head to head in the final round.

It should be a treat to watch tonight. Let's hope both guys play well, and we have an exciting finish no matter who wins.

I read in the paper comments from Tiger excusing a lot of behavior from Chinese fans that he'd never excuse in the States or Europe.....lots of cameras going off, inappropriate movement in the gallery at the wrong time, loud comments etc. He said something to the effect that the Chinese are not a golfing country, and they have to catch up and learn golf etiquette. (Picture thousands of tigerman equivalents running around the course with cameras.)
When watching the broadcast yesterday, I was disappointed they picked up one bad habit really fast....yelling "get in the hole" right after each shot.

The Masters really became elevated in status after the Nelson-Hogan battle in '42 and the Snead-Hogan battle in '54.

The Players championship (or the TPC as it was then called) was really helped by early Nicklaus victories.

This WGC event in China will be elevated in status not only by Mickelson and (eventually) Woods wins.....but by Tiger-Phil battles like this weekend. This championship will become a "must watch" tournament relatively fast.

Yes, I noticed it too, and I noticed it when I watched last year. Certainly it happens to Tiger more than the other players (the crowd noise, etc.) but it affects the other top players who aren't used to it, too.

I give Tiger credit for showing restraint and backing off. I read another story that the fans are bringing in cameras with huge lenses and fans are blatantly gabbing on their cell phones wherever they see fit.

If Nicklaus is right - that an Asian golf boom will be the next big happening in golf - then the tournament organizers have to do a much better job of educating the fans and enforcing the rules of how the fans need to behave.

Yeah definitely. Allowing cameras and cell phones on the course during the actual tournament is a bad precedent. They need to limit them to practice rounds like the States and Europe.

Let's face it, for a long time the Chinese will be the least knowledgeable golf gallery the players play in front of.....they have a lot of catching up to do. The British Open galleries and Masters galleries didn't become knowledgable overnight, they have a long history.

But they can start with banning cameras and cell phones during the tournament.

I'm in agreement that patience is necessary as China is ushered onto the world golf stage.

Yep, the tournament officials/organizers couldn't have asked for a much better scenario than Phil/Tiger in the final pairing. If Phil continues his good play into next year, this could become something we see more often.

It would certainly be great golf to watch and I'm hoping that's what we see.
