Anyone have any drills to work on creating lag in the golf swing. I know Im killing myself in the distance department from not creating proper lag. I posted earlier about the inside approach swing trainer and was wondering if this swing trainer helps with lag or is it just for helping with the OTT swing? I should be hitting all of my clubs much further than I currently do(Im always 1 and sometimes 2 clubs higher than everyone I play with), part of it is due to my OTT swing which Im working on but I know Im not creating the proper lag needed for the distance Im lacking. Here is what Im currently hitting each club.
Driver: 230-250(should be 265+)
3 wood: 215-230(should be 240-50)
5 wood/2 hybrid:205-215(should be 220-30)
3 hybrid: 190-200(should be 210-220)
4 iron: 180-190(should be 200-10)
5 iron: 170-180(should be 180-90)
6 iron: 155-170(should be 170-80)
7 iron: 145-155(should be 160-70)
8 iron: 135-145(should be 150-60)
9 iron: 120-130(should be 140-50)
PW: 100-120(should be 125-135)
SW: 75-90
LW: Under 75

Age, flexibility, strength is not my problem, creating lag and my OTT swing are my 2 problems. Im working on the OTT but need input on how to create lag. Thanks.

I hate to be the first one to respond to this, because there are so many here that understand this better than me. Oh well, here goes.

I think lag is a by-product of a lot going right before it. And it starts with grip and address position - you have to get the club and body in the right places at the top to transition properly, and grip and address position have enormous influence on this.

The second thing is tempo, rhythm and balance. All the parts and pieces have to work in the right sequence. A "graceful" attitude and patience at the top seems to help me a lot, as well as the image of getting totally through the ball onto my left side.

Anyway, I am out of my league giving much input re this, but these are the things I have learned that I am comfortable with blurting out.

I'll chime in. First, I don't think you are that far off in your distances, you're farther than I am and I play to a 12 index.
Secondly, if you start your down swing with your hips instead of your shoulders, which I'm assuming you do because you are OTT, lag will be created naturally. Put in Ben Hogan in the You Tube search box. Nobody created lag like him.

If you are hitting fairways & greens then why concern yourself with "extra" distance? Everybody hits their clubs different distances depending upon thier swing & style of play. I play with a number of guys that are considerably longer than I am throught the bag, but I just stick to hitting fairways & greens & the score will take care of itself. I usually get to collect at the end of the round instead of pulling out my wallet.

Jack always responded to the "how do I get more distance" questions with: "Hit it more pure". A simpler answer can not be found.

By searching for those extra 10-15 yds you may lose some accuracy, consistnecy, & control. Hitting D 265+ is great....if it's in the short grass. 15+ yds into the rough or woods doesn't help at all.

Best of luck. I hope you find some advice on the db that helps you out. BTW, those Hogan videos on YouTube are AWESOME!

Fairways & Greens!

Hi. I happened to be at Carl's golfland in Detroit last weekend and I was two bays down from Evan "big Cat" Williams. I never got a chance to talk to him as the guy next to me talked his ear off for the whole time I was there but I picked up a few things overhearing their conversations. One thing that interested me and might be akin to your question was that he said on more than one occasion that early set will promote late release. I don't know how this follows but I have run into the same idea in golf mags that give tips on getting greater distance. Williams is 62 now but at one time was the premier long driving champ so I would tend to at least give his advice some serious thought. Hope this helps.

I try and feel like I'm hitting the ball with the butt end of the club and my hands always stays ahead of the club head.

REAd hOGAN'S 5 FUNDAMENTALS ...oops sorry for caps.......esp chapter on the downswing and hand position.

there is lag, and there is a late release.

It is easier to be accurate and more consistant with a late release, IMO.

good luck

How do you know that you have an issue with lack of lag in your swing and that lack of lag is the root cause of your lack of distance?

If you make a stronger grip, you'll get lag. Which invalidates lag as a deciding factor of distance. It is a consiquence of other factors like accelleration, grip, muscular manipulation, and arm action.
