I'm looking at a set of J36 combo irons with the project X 6.0 shafts. I have driver swing speed of 103-105 and have a little trouble getting my muscle back long irons up. How about the Project X shaft vs. the S300??

If you are thinking about Project X shafts to replace S300's, I would definitely demo them first. They just don't play the same, so it is individual preference. In terms of flex though, I wouldn't go any higher than 5.5 if you are looking for a fairly equivalent match for the S300's.

Thanks, I had Project X 6.0's in my Taylormade R7 TP's. That is about the right flex for me.

OK, I thought since you asked about the PX 6.0 vs. the S300's, you didn't have experience with the PX's. What did you think of the R7 TP irons? I picked up a set recently on the internet at a good price and they are just too "game improvementy" for me, which wasn't really what I expected. I went back to my Z101's within 2 rounds.

I just sold the R7 TP's. I was just searching for information on the Z101's. I understand they were Japan released only. Are they pure blades? What shaft came in them? I'm playing Titleist 681's now but the 3 and 4 are tough to get up to altitude.

I don't believe they were Japan only, but they are no longer produced. Not that hard to find on Ebay, but a near mint set may be harder to find. I bought a set of just refinished heads about 3 years ago. I put Tour Flighted Rifles in mine. They are .355 taper tips and forged cavity backs, but the size of the heads, topline, sole design, etc. are similar to most blades. In other words, they are "players cavity backs." Sweetest set of irons I've ever played.

Mine are pocket cavity throughout and I really, really like them. I happened to buy mine used from someone who knew people in Bridgestone and he had them put Tour Concept shafts in them - I have never seen a set since then with these shafts offered anywhere, but man they perform and feel great for me with a swing about 10 mph slower than yours....

I can offer you this advice from my own experience. In the summer, in the heat (above 85ºf) I wasn't getting enough air under my 3 and 4 iron. I play with Titleist 695 MB's PX 6.0 shafts. I just took the 3,4,5 irons and lofted the (3 and 4) by 2º and the (5) by 1º. Problem solved. Higher and longer in all cases. Now for the winter, I will return them to standard lofts.

I've had three sets of 681 mb's. Very solid irons. If you want a little more lift, I would recommend TF Rifles in 6.0 as the PX shafts in 6.0 will feel markedly stiffer than the S300's. You can weigh your heads (reference to std head weight) and use 4 to 6 gram tip weights to put a little more feel into the PX 6.0 shafts. I did that with a set of PX 6.5 shafts on my Mizuno MP-67's. They SW at D5 but they feel really smooth. I also jacked the lofts on my MP-67's by the same amount for the summer.

There are no definitive answers. We are all different and it's always personal preference.

Do you have little trouble getting the long irons up, or is it difficult to get the 3,4 up to altitude?

The type of irons you should use depends on how you swing the clubs.

As clubs are designed, if you have clubs to fit your swing and a shaft to fit your swing, then you should have a uniform distance between irons.

Assuming you have checked loft and lie angles.

If you are losing distance gap as the irons get longer, it could be incorrect clubs for your swing, incorrect shaft, or possibly incorrect lie angle.

681 have .5* gap in lie angle from wedge to 5 iron, from 5 to longer the lie angle gap increases to 1*. This is for you to swing just a little flatter so that the club arc is more level at impact and so you generate just a little more power.

Yes I know that club builders that have equipment like mine say that .5-1* doesn't make any difference. That's because it is difficult to get exact lie angles. It does make a difference.

So you could try .5* upright on your 4 iron and see if that works, if so 1* upright for the 3 iron. This could cause your impact to be a little off in comparison to the shorter irons.

If that doesn't work, then I would try as 2club suggested and add a little loft to the 3,4. Contrary to popular belief a uniform distance gap is much more important than a uniform loft gap.

Then I would go to shaft changes for the 3,4 irons. This could be a lower bend point shaft, or a softer flex, or both.

Then I'd try a different head style. A cb, hybrid, or high lofted fairway wood.

Remember it doesn't matter what it looks like or the number on the club, it matters that club fits your swing and you get the distance you want.
